What factors should you consider when purchasing a 20x30x1 air filter?
Ratings

Air filters are in place to eliminate pollutants in the atmosphere, such as dust and pet dander, and keep the contaminants out of the air, thereby protecting our lungs. An air filter must be operational in order to protect you from asthma triggers, which you may determine using the minimal efficiency reporting value, abbreviated as MERV.

This MERV value indicates how powerful the filter is as well as how frequently it will need to be replaced. You will save money on the first purchase if the number is low, but you will pay a lot of money on replacements if the number is high. The filter’s efficiency will also be hampered.

A low MERV rating, on the other hand, assures that your central heating and cooling system will work properly and that airflow will be unfettered. Homeowners that use filters should be fine with anything from MERV 4 to 10. Due to the nature of the activities in play as well as the significant quantity of contaminants in the atmosphere, commercial and industrial locations will require a higher rating.

Aside from the MERV rating, there are a few additional factors to be aware of when it comes to air filters:

Types \sFiberglass

This type of filter has a flat surface and a slender design that acts to trap undesirable particles in the air. They strive to keep these contaminants out of your central heating and cooling system, which can lower the quality of your air. They aren’t intended to help you enhance your interior air quality, so don’t expect much from them.

The good thing about them is that you can get them for a fair price, which allows you to save money. However, only around 10% of pollutants should be removed, which is insufficient for someone with children, pets, or who lives in a dusty area. They also have ratings in the ranges of 1-4, which is fairly limiting.

Pleated

These filters are highly active, and depending on the brand, you can expect them to remove at least half of the harmful particles from the air. When choosing a pleated air filter, keep in mind the number of pleats per foot; the higher the number, the better. You will spend around five times as much as you would on fiberglass brands in terms of pricing, but considering that they have MERV ratings of 10-13, the investment will be worthwhile.

The more pleats per foot you have, the better the ventilation in your home will be, and you’ll breathe cleaner air as a result. You should look for a brand that has at least eighteen pleats per foot to get the most out of your filter.

If the pleats are limited, you should avoid using the product since you will end up with dirty air traveling through your vents, putting your HVAC system at risk. In such a circumstance, getting the fiberglass brands would be preferable.

Filters with a High-Efficiency Rating

These air filters are perfect for dusty areas as well as areas with a large population. Because of their high MERV ratings, which range from 14 to 16, they can remove at least 85 percent of the undesirable particles in the air. These filters are capable of trapping micron-sized particles and are ideal for allergy sufferers. Microbe-killing coatings are available on some brands.

When you use a filter like this, you should notice an increase in the efficiency of your central heating and cooling system, which will cut your utility expenses. You should also notice a difference in the quality of the air. They are well worth your money.

True HEPA filtration

With these filters, you should expect an efficiency rating between 17 and 20. They have the ability to remove up to 98 percent of pollutants from your house. The only drawback is that these filters can only be used as independent air purifiers or as part of a whole-house filtration system. Keep in mind that the greater the MERV rating, the more likely the airflow will be restricted, which is something you should expect with these filters.

Due to the absence of enough pressure to move air through this filter, you may discover that you are unable to use it as a standard filter for your home. Because a standard HVAC system cannot deliver the force required for such a filter, you should consider installing a separate HEPA filtration system that will filter the air and return it to the regular airflow.

The options listed above are suggestions based on MERV ratings and filter types, and should aid you in your quest for clean air. You should be fine as long as you change your filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
